It's so annoying when an author uses the same description over and over...and a really bad one at that! Writing about an abuse victim and describing 'backhanding' tears away. When I read backhanding I think she's getting slapped. Sigh... just a little annoyance. It's so annoying when an author uses the same description over and over...and a really bad one at that! I'll admit that the title of this novel, His Battered Submissive: Restrained Fantasies #3, by new-to-me author, Brandi Evans, was more than a bit unsettling. I'm no stranger to domestic abuse, having read books like The Burning Bed in the past, and watching a lot of true crime shows, plus having personal friendships with more than a few victims of domestic abuse. I'm no stranger to domestic abuse, having read books like The Burning Bed in the past, and watching a lot of true crime shows, plus having personal friendships with more than a few victims of domestic abuse. What I couldn't wrap my head around was the concept of such a woman being into the BDSM scene, but Ms. Evans, in this page-turner of a steamy, action-packed thriller of a read made a believer out of me, and it gets a 5-star rating from this reader. The battered wife in question is Katyln Harris, who has been married to her violently abusive husband, Jeff, for almost a decade. She's already made 3 attempts to leave him, each failed, and after each attempt, he beat her senseless, raped her, broke her ribs, an arm, etc., and when he had to leave her alone at home, he left her chained and naked in the basement, and rather than considering it torture, Katlyn was instead relieved that she'd have 48 hours in which she wouldn't be beaten. I will warn you strongly that if domestic abuse, rape, graphic violence, and graphic BDSM sex scenes are triggers for you, pass this one by with my strong recommendation that this novel is not for the under 18 reader or the faint of heart. The hero in this novel, Dallas police detective, Maddox Westbrook, spots Katlyn at a posh restaurant in the company of her husband. Jeff has ordered a really expensive dinner, while all she's ordered is a tiny side salad and water, not because she isn't hungry, but because she doesn't want her husband to accuse her of racking up a large bill--he won't even allow her one of the free dinner rolls that accompany their meal, and although she knows he'll probably accuse her and beat her when they get home anyway, she sits cowering in her seat. When Jeff steps away from the table due to a ruse by Maddox and his partner, Maddox approaches her, tells her she's not alone and vows to help her get away, and despite her fear, she begins to trust him when he does spirit her away to rescue her from the nightmare she's been enduring. What Maddox doesn't tell her is that he's not only into the BDSM scene at a private club, Restrained Fantasies, but he's a Dom there, and he's strongly attracted to Katlyn. What he doesn't know is that prior to her dreadful marriage to Jeff Harris, whom she met in college, she and her best friend used to frequent Restrained Fantasies on weekends for kicks, and that Katyln did have one steamy encounter with a sexy, masked Dom there during a masquerade night. She found herself turned on by the BDSM scene, but never considered herself to be a submissive, and once she became involved with Jeff, as most abusers do, he alienated her from her close friends, her career choice (nursing), and her family, who had no idea what kind of nightmare her life had become--but that's about to change in a big way. Detective Maddox has vowed to keep her safe, and was willing to give up his career to do so, but Jeff, like most abusers, isn't going to simply let his wife, his "property" leave him. He has connections with an organization known only as "The Group", some of whom are in the police department, and he enlists their help in trying to find Katlyn, not only to beat her because she left him yet again, but now he wants revenge, and after doing what he'd done to her in the past, he plans to kill her. From this point onward, this novel becomes both a race against time to keep Katyln safe from Jeff and whoever is helping him track her, as well as the beginning of budding relationship between Maddox and Katyln. It also eventually moves into their sexual preferences, with Maddox revealing his Dom nature and his involvement in the BDSM lifestyle, and Katlyn admitting to him her interest in the same, and so, in addition to being one heck of an action thriller, this novel also becomes a seriously steamy, and suspenseful romance as well. While at the outset I truly didn't believe that Ms. Evans could pull off writing a novel combining violent domestic abuse and a BDSM romance, but I must admit that she made a believer out of me. Her characters are fully developed, her writing style, timing and plotting are all quite good, and the relationship between her two main characters sweet as well as hot, and the secondary characters from the previous two novels in this series were intriguing enough that I immediately purchased and downloaded both of them, as soon as I finished reading this one, which worked just fine as a standalone. If you can handle the tough subject matter, I think you'll find this novel to be quite a gripping, tense and sexy read. I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.

Touching A sweet, suspenseful story of a very battered woman finding a second chance at love. Kat and her Sir are great characters with a ton of chemistry. I loved how kink is portrayed as a healing force that helps Kat rediscover her inner strength and agency. Great secondary characters, too, and I very much hope Kirkland gets his own book. Fabulous story. This was my first book by this author, and I can’t wait to read more. I feel in love with the characters, both the main and supporting ones, as they came to life with the imagery of her words. My emotions ran the gamut from fear to overwhelming relief and joy. Well written and heart melting - five+ sizzling stars. Looking forward to where the author takes us next.

Actually 3.75 stars First off, the title is crap, and makes it sound like MC Maddox is the one battering MC Katlyn, instead of being the detective who helped rescue her and now is protecting her from her abusive ex-husband. The good: Maddox and Katlyn are great characters, and we've seen their relationship build over the first two books in the series. Their relationship is inevitable, and it's good for both of them. Giving her the backstory that she does, it's also understandable that Katlyn can separate consensual BDSM from the abuse she went through at the hands of her ex-husband. The bad: There are giant plot holes in the suspense part of the plot. No matter how powerful her ex is, he shouldn't be able to do what he does in this novel. That being said, because I really liked the two MCs and their relationship, I am giving the book 3.75 stars.

This is the third book in a series featuring the denizens of Restrained Fantasies, the kind of, well, fantasy BDSM club common to this genre. I do want to warn potential readers that the h was a victim of domestic violence, which we read about in flashbacks. I've read all three and have to be honest and say that this was my least favorite. I will say that if you're looking for consensual, mild erotica featuring likeable characters and underpinned by some story, you will enjoy this. As always, I commend the author for depicting strong subs and doms who appreciate that strength; her facility with dialogue and competent writing and editing; and the SSC of her BDSM scenes. That said, this author's plots tend to be OTT and while I understand -- and prefer -- that stories with some substance anchor the kink, Ms. Evans piles on the drama so much that it becomes ludicrous. In this case, Jeff not only is so incredibly abusive that it boggles the mind that no hospital ever called the police, but also (view spoiler)[murders an entire family, including two children. The Group is an interesting idea and the reveal at the end a genuine surprise, but it belongs in a different genre (mystery, crime); its pairing with kink simply creates too much dissonance (hide spoiler)] . Finally, there are too many coincidences ((view spoiler)[Maddox and Carter' putting two and two together a la Strangers on a Train on such little evidence is a huge leap; the therapist Kat goes to turns out to be her long-lost college friend; and Maddox and Kat's memory of a singe night a decade ago was too much and not needed for the development of their relationship (hide spoiler)] ). Finally, I find the title offensive since it trivializes domestic abuse (and also makes it seem as though the H is the one doing the battering). 3 1/2 stars. The ending indicates that there will be a fourth book, which I think will feature (view spoiler)[Hunter and Carrie (hide spoiler)] . Finally, if you want to read this, I strongly suggest not reading the long review one ARC reader left. Like many ARC readers, she has revealed the book's entire plot. I don't know why ARC readers think that's okay, why they can't use the spoiler function, or why authors don't do anything about this, but there you are.

Our heroine is trapped in an abusive relationship but our hero has vowed to help her escape it. Of course, that is easier said than done, particularly when their hearts are on the line as well. The story is well written and easy to read, with a solid cast of characters that are well developed and believable (unfortunately, the bad guy is included in that description). But in spite of some rough patches for our heroine, the story is really very enjoyable. I like the determination of both our hero and heroine to make things better and the attraction between them that grows throughout the story. The story is fast paced with a lot going on at all times and several unexpected twists and turns which keep you turning pages to see what comes next. It also doesn't hurt that we get a nice bit of steam as well. Overall, an excellent read. I am definitely looking forward to reading more by this author. Highly recommended. This book was an emotional read that affected me in many different ways. Violence against women in today's enlightened society should never be allowed to exist. Women and children die every year at the hands of brutal husbands and fathers. Katlyn never stopped fighting for her freedom, surviving to love again. I thought her determination to overcome her painful years as a battered wife impressive. Her strength in the face of adversity gained my admiration. Her story was a powerful reminder of what can happen when people turn a blind eye to what is happening around them. I thought this book was very dark at times but it was not all dark. The concept was great, I loved the story. I was very happy that Maddox and Kat had their story told. It was refreshing to see that she had a change of heart and went back when she did. Also that Genny had the intelligence to know she was being followed. It was a little scary that there is a group of people that did the Quid Pro Quo. Beautiful story of love, abuse and healing. The storyline is moving between action, suspense and of course hot romance. Some flashes from the past and weird dream about future are related to PTSD . Kat was abused in every unimaginable way but her will to live and spirit to do so never was lost. Maddox, her saviour is detective working on her case. He will keep her save but..he can’t save himself for falling hard for her. Some suspense twists and turns definitely keep me on the edge. Great book. I rece Beautiful story of love, abuse and healing. The storyline is moving between action, suspense and of course hot romance. Spousal abuse is a very nasty thing to deal with. I have dealt with it personally and with my family and friends. People who believe in you, do save you and get you in the right direction. Highly emotional storyline with in-depth characters, back stories and edge-of-your-seat moments. Good decisions and trust create a warm new family around them. You will not be able to put this book down until it is done. Looking forward to the next book by this author. I'm impressed with the way this book was written. Maddax and Kats relationship is one you don't get the experience to witness very often. While there was mutiple types of abuse and kidnapping, there was also laughter, love and friendship. It was all very well intertwined. Full of anticipation and longing, to know what happens to this wonderful couple. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is a tightly written tale of abuse and healing. The writer's tone carries the reader through the action, suspense, and human connection without hesitation and with care without getting caught up in the subject. This is my first by this writer, but I've enjoyed the journey she's led me on, so I'll look for more. I'll also be recommending to those friends who'd like a clean read about a rough subject. Please, Please, PLEASE! MIND THE TRIGGER WARNING! I am not sure that I even know where to begin writing a review for this because it is truly an awesome experience. I loved everything about it - the characters, the plot, the emotion, the writing. The author had a tremendous ability in telling the story that had me wanting this book to go on and on. I enjoyed this steamy romance story. This is a new author for me and I look forward to reading more in the future. This is a well written story that brings romance to a new level. The characters are connectable and engaging. They made the story easy to read and entertaining. I found this book to be fast paced and I read it in one day. It brings the heat and kept me turning pages. I highly recommend this book.

Great portrayal of bravery Maddox is a detective, and Katlyn is the abuse case he never forgot. When the finally reunite (after she escapes her abuser), their relationship blossoms into love, as Katlyn gets braver and braver. Such a beautiful portrayal of love overcoming horrible pasts. On top of that, this novel is action-packed, gripping you to the very end. An overall great read.
